In September of 2007, after certain forums started drowning people in spam, we made one simple request of
anyone representing a paysite here: to please post a return link back to the 'Pad on the site they were advertising.
Frequently-returning vendors that share update notices multiple times per week were also asked to contact me as another indication of their sincerity. We want people participating here for reasons beyond just leeching potential sales from our memberbase.
Not too terrible, right?
Unfortunately not everyone played ball, and to be honest, after a while it stopped being enforced. Most of the hit-and-run spammers we'd never see again were eliminated, but others slowly crept back in, saturating the board with posts heavy on links and light on content. Months ago we reminded everyone again, though, and since then there are new places being eliminated every week.
The cool part is, it should serve as an indication that most of the remaining vendors are the product of cool people with sites worthy of your membership. And when the time comes, we know exactly who to reach out to to help.
Today is a biggy, though. Because as has been pointed out to me, while many vendors have been gracious enough to abide by one of the only rules we ask of them, there's one prevelant source of spamming -- CLIPS4SALE -- that actively disallows users of their site from providing links back anywhere under their actual Terms of Service. Since I'm pretty sure the dude that created C4S used to hang out here back in the day, that's a little hard to accept.
Anyway, this loophole is being closed. No more Clips4Sale spamming from anyone, unless they figure out a way to put the 'Pad link where people see it. If you have another domain that serves as a frontpage to your C4S store, feel free to put something there. But it's no longer acceptable for the cool folks that have been friends of this community to follow the rules, while other heavy spammers get away with ignoring them.
Seem fair enough to everyone?
If you represent a paysite, you post your links here, and you haven't been in touch with me about any of this, now would be a good time to shoot over an email.
